Olivine City is a city in the video games Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Jasmine is the Gym Leader here. The city is a port town, and features a tall lighthouse and a dock due to its location on the edge of the sea. It is located South-West of Ecruteak City and North-East of Cianwood City. The player can follow Routes 38 and 39 from Ecruteak City or take routes 40 and 41 from Cianwood City. Olivine city appears to have got its name from the olive, as most other cities are named after plants. It is based on Kobe [citation needed].

The music from Olivine City and Violet City was remixed for use in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The remixed music is used on Six and Seven Islands.

[edit] Places of interest

[edit] Fisherman's House

Residing in the small house beside the Pokémon mart is a fisherman. When the player speaks to him, he/she will get the Good Rod. This is a better rod than the previously obtained Old Rod. With it the player can catch higher leveled Pokémon and even some new types. Other than that, it functions the same way as all other rods.

[edit] Sailor's House

Residing in the large house beside the Pokémon center is a sailor. Another friendly person, he will give the player HM: 04 so one can teach their Pokémon Strength. Using this technique, players will be able to move large boulders out of their way. This can be used to access new places and is required in the next gym.

[edit] Center and Mart

Like almost every other city and town, Olivine City contains both a Pokémon Center and a Pokémon Mart. These both function exactly the same as all others.

[edit] Trader's House

In the small house directly north-east of the Pokémon Mart is a trainer who will offer to make a trade with the player. He will offer the player a Voltorb in exchange for a Krabby. Since Voltorb cannot be found in the wild in Johto, this can be very useful to players.

[edit] The Lighthouse

The lighthouse is a six floor building with trainers everywhere. The player can scale the tower when he or she first arrives in Olivine City to find Jasmine, the gym leader. She will tell the player that her Ampharos is ill, and she will only battle the player if the player will first go to Cianwood City to retrieve the Pokémon's medicine. The building starts off simple, but the player will soon be solving minor puzzles to advance. Items found in the tower include: Ether, Rare Candy, TM: 34 (To teach Swagger), Great Ball and Super Potion. Also, the sailor on the second floor will give the player his phone number if asked. His name is Huey.

[edit] S.S. Aqua

This is one of two cities (the other being Vermilion City) where one can board the S.S. Aqua. After players become the Pokémon Champion, they will be able to take the S.S. Aqua to Vermilion City. This is how the player begins his or her Kanto Tour. It is filled with trainers and will only land when one completes an errand. The errand is to find the old man from the lower-right room's granddaughter. She is located in the captain's quarters. However, before going there, one must find a slacking worker before going to the lower deck. The player will also receive the Metal Coat for their trouble. This nifty item can evolve Onix into Steelix and Scyther into Scizor, as well as raise the strength of Steel-type moves by around 1.25 times.

[edit] Battle Tower (Pokémon Crystal only)

In Crystal, Battle Tower is located to the west. In the Japanese version, a player could use the mobile adapter to battle real players worldwide. However, the US version contained a mere "Fight 'till you drop" system, having almost no relation with its Japanese counterpart.

[edit] The Pokémon Gym

When the player first arrives in the city, the only person to be found at the gym is the player's Rival, who remarks that he is looking for Jasmine. As it turns out, Jasmine has gone to the lighthouse to check up on a sick Ampharos who usually provides the light source for the lighthouse. After the player travels to Cianwood City using Surf, which can be found in Ecruteak City, and picks up some medicine for Ampharos, Jasmine will give the medicine to the Pokémon and head back to the Gym, satisfied that her work with Ampharos is done. This is a unique gym because there is only one battle, Jasmine herself. Jasmine is a trainer of the Steel type, which was introduced in this generation along with the Dark type. She can be found in possession of two Magnemites and a Steelix. A Fire-type can use super-effective hits against all three, Water is effective against Steel/Ground-type Steelix, and a Ground-type will be immune to the Electric attacks that Magnemite can know. Once the player defeats Jasmine, the player will receive the Mineral Badge and also TM23 (for teaching Iron Tail to one's Pokémon).
