[edit] Expanded overview

Detective McNeal takes Fred at gunpoint to Wolfram and Hart offices. Once there he explains that he has been working on the Black Dahlia killings even beyond his retiremet. He produces an artist's impression of the killer, and says that Spike had been responsible for a murder that took place decades previously. Spike attempts to solve one of the most infamous unsolved crimes that has taken place in LA history. Meanwhile there are various monster-slayings for the gang to solve. Angel and his co-workers assume that McNeal is right but Spike denies involvement. He gets help from Fred. He explains what he was doing in 1947. He was in L.A. curious about America. He worked for a big shot called Norris Lawrence until he was run out of town by Los Amanos. Fred and Spike go to McNeal's apartment but he has been killed, apparently a victim of the Black Dahlia killer. Spike follows a lead, and finds the killer, Angel and co turn up after he the demon has been dispatched. Spike thanks Fred for the help, tells Eve to keep him out of any plans for Angel, and berates Angel, Wes, and the others for thinking the worst of him.

[edit] Canonical issues

Main article: Buffyverse canon

Buffy/Angel comics such as this one are not usually considered by fans as canonical. Some fans consider them stories from the imaginations of authors and artists, while other fans consider them as taking place in an alternative fictional reality. However unlike fan fiction, overviews summarising their story, written early in the writing process, were 'approved' by both Fox and Joss Whedon (or his office), and the books were therefore later published as officially Buffy merchandise.
