Old Roan railway station is a railway station in Aintree village, Merseyside, England, about seven miles north-east of Liverpool, on the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network.

[edit] Location

The station is located on Ormskirk Road, with the southbound platform accessible from Ormskirk Road and the northbound platform under the railway bridge on Copy Lane (which is actually in Netherton). Interchange with local bus services is available on both Ormskirk Road, Copy Lane and from the stations new bus depot. Old Roan is a more convenient station for much of Aintree Village compared with Aintree.

The station was originally on the Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway with services running to Liverpool Exchange and Southport's Southport Lord Street railway station, by means of Cheshire Lines Committee's Southport & Cheshire Lines Extension Railway added in 1884.

After Old Roan the CLC line diverged, and crossing Switch Island and continuing on an embankment toward Southport.

In the late 1970s, the construction of the Merseyrail Loop and Link lines connected Old Roan to the Merseyrail Northern Line.

Old Roan is served by electric trains between Liverpool Central and Ormskirk. There are trains every 15 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytime, and every 30 minutes at other times.

Old Roan station has seen significant improvements made to it over the past 5 years. The station was totally renovated in 2002, a lift installed, and underground subway added to link both platforms. A waiting room has been installed on the Liverpool platform.

[edit] Trivia

The station is named after a pub that it overlooks. The name is a reference to an old Roan Horse.
