Comparing old and modern mahjong tiles.

This picture shows the modern mahjong tiles in contrast with the old tiles. The modern tiles are made of hard plastic. The old tiles shown here are made of ivory with bamboo backings. The two layers are dovetailed together.

According to the owner of these tiles, the modern tiles were purchased new in Hong Kong back in the 1980's. The old tiles was acquired used by the family in some kind of junkyard sale back in the 1960's. Small tiles were out of favor in Hong Kong back then. The age of the tiles is unknown.
