Ohio Theatre

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ohio Theatre is the official state theater of Ohio,[citation needed] located in downtown Columbus on the former site of the old Columbus City Hall. It was designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb, constructed of limestone from the Marble Cliff Quarry Co. and furnished by Anne Dornan. Built in 1928 to be a Loew's movie palace, the 2,779 seat Spanish Baroque masterpiece came complete with its own orchestra and theatre organ. In addition to movies, many famous vaudeville acts graced the stage, including Milton Berle, Ray Bolger, Buddy Ebsen, Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers, and Jack Benny. The building was threatened with destruction in the 1960's before being saved and renovated by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA). Today it serves as the home of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet, the Broadway Series, and the CAPA Summer Movie Series.
