  • Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 crashes over the Black Sea en route from Tel Aviv Israel to Novosibirsk Russia - 78 dead.
• October 7 - The American attack on Afghanistan begins. The United Kingdom participates.
• October 8 - Linate Airport disaster: MD-87 of SAS collides first with a private plane and then a building at Linate Airport in Milan, Italy - 100 dead
• October 9 - The 2001 anthrax attacks continue as anthrax letters are mailed from Princeton, New Jersey to Senators Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
