Occupation is the season premiere of the third season of Battlestar Galactica. In between season 3 and season 2's finale, Lay Down Your Burdens, occurs the webisodic shorts series Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance. "Occupation" aired on October 6, 2006 and was immediately followed by the second episode, "Precipice".

The season premiere picks up roughly four months after season two with Cylon occupation of New Caprica. The remaining ships of the fleet successfully escaped, but are cut off from the nearly forty thousand humans on New Caprica. Colonel Tigh has been captured by the Cylons, and Anders and Chief Petty Officer Tyrol attempt to lead a resistance against the Cylons.
Colonel Tigh has been held captive in the Cylon detention facility for an unspecified, but extended, period of time, and is released to the custody of Ellen Tigh after her sexual liaison with Cylon Brother Cavil earns her husband's freedom. During his incarceration, the Cylons ripped out Colonel Tigh's right eye.
Starbuck is being held somewhere in what looks like a decorated apartment similar to the one she had back on Caprica. The Cylon Leoben Conoy "lives" with her and wants to start a relationship. She rejects his advances and has repeatedly "killed" him at least five times when given the opportunity, only to have him return a few hours later after downloading himself into a new body. Despite being repeatedly murdered, Leoben continues with extreme patience in getting Kara to accept his companionship. She is shown to kill him at a meal. When he returns, she refuses to share his bed and is left with his body. In desperation, she runs up and out into a hallway, but a barred door blocks her escape, revealing that her apartment is a really an elaborate prison cell. She bangs on the bars screaming to be let out.
Tyrol and Anders detonate a bomb planted in a Cylon docking facility as a number of Cylons exit the craft; The Cylon Heavy Raider is destroyed along with the Cylons in close proximity.
Upon his release from detention, Tigh orders an escalation in the violence against the Cylons, and resorts to sending suicide bombers against them. One suicide bomber, Duck (introduced in "The Resistance" webisodes) detonates himself at the graduation ceremony for the newest class of the NCP (New Caprica Police). The NCP is recruited from the human population, and the Cylons hope to use them to replace Centurion patrols on the streets of Caprica City.
Meanwhile, Tyrol and Anders receive word from an informant within the Cylon infrastructure, whose identity has not been revealed, concerning the jamming frequencies the Cylons are using to block wireless transmissions. Tigh, determined to make contact with the raptor that he thinks is near New Caprica (as per a contigency plan established by Admiral Adama), has Tyrol scan various frequencies to get through the jamming. Tyrol is successful is getting a message to an off-planet Raptor and is assured that Galactica and Pegasus are making arrangements to help the civilians that have been left under Cylon control.
The NCP is so unpopular with the human population that its members must wear masks to protect their identities. Jammer (a former insurgent-turned-Cylon-collaborator who was also featured in "The Resistance" and made cameo appearances in earlier seasons) is among those who secretly join the NCP, initially hoping to do some good.
Adama and Apollo struggle to bring the fleet back to fighting strength. Apollo is still overweight and Adama considers him "soft" and possibly unfit for service. Dualla, who is now Apollo's wife, agrees with Admiral Adama.
