Ober Ost (short for the German term Oberbefehlshabers der gesamten deutschen Streitkräfte im Osten) was a German World War I military administration governing a large part of the German-held areas of the Russian Empire. It covered roughly 108.808 km² of Courland, Lithuania and the Polish areas of Augustów and Suwałki. It was created by the Oberste Heeresleitung in 1915 and its first commander was Prince Leopold of Bavaria.
