Oakland City is the second-largest city in Gibson County, Indiana and is the home of Oakland City University. The population was 2,588 at the 2000 census.

Oakland City is located at 38°20′17″N, 87°20′50″W (38.337953, -87.347356)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,588 people, 1,031 households, and 642 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.4/km² (2,352.6/mi²). There were 1,176 housing units at an average density of 412.8/km² (1,069.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.60% White, 0.73% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.43% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.55% of the population.

There were 1,031 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 16.3% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,532, and the median income for a family was $37,440. Males had a median income of $30,500 versus $24,602 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,806. About 7.6% of families and 11.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1% of those under age 18 and 10.4% of those age 65 or over.

HIGHER EDUCATION - Oakland City is home of Oakland City University (traditional studies), the only General Baptist affiliate University, with a global campus providing over 40 degrees from Associate, Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate studies and Oakland City University School of Adult and Extended Learningwith programs that specialize on busy adult students.
