Oakham Canal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oakham Canal ran from Melton Wharf to Oakham through 18 locks it opened in 1802[1]. The canal's main cargo was coal. The canal lacked a proper water supply which meant it was often impassable in the summer. Competition from the railways resulted in canal being sold to the Syston-Peterborough Railway in 1845.[2]
