North Island flag. Unofficial in that it is not gazetted, but has been seen in various online publications. Supposed representation is that the red color comes from the color sacred to both Maori and European, with the white strip at the bottom representing "the long white cloud" of New Zealand. The Maori name for the North Island is boldly emblazoned over the strip. In order to blend in with the flag, the New Zealand Red Ensign is placed in the canton.
