Nyoi-bō

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nyoi-bō (如意棒?), known in the FUNimation dub as the Power Pole, is a weapon in the manga Dragon Ball and the anime Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, as well as it's appearance in the manga Gensomaden Saiyuki and its anime adaptation.

The Nyoi-bō is one of Son Gokū's primary weapons in Dragon Ball. The Nyoi-bō is a wooden, red, magical staff given to Gokū from Grandpa Gohan. It has the ability to grow very, very long and then back to normal by the user's voice command. It is believed by many fans of the series to be also unbreakable. Often, Gokū uses the Nyoi-bō very creatively in Dragon Ball, and it is basically a lifesaver until he learns how to perform Bukujutsu (The Japanese Rōmaji word for flying).

The Nyoi-bō actually originates from Kami-sama's Lookout and Karin-tō; Karin reveals that the Nyoi-bō was the "ladder" connecting Karin-tō and Kami-sama's Lookout. Gokū uses the Nyoi-bō as a ride to go to Kami-sama's Lookout, incidentally.

In Dragon Ball Z: Budōkai 3, The Nyoi-bō is used by 'Kid Gokū' as a special weapon attack for charge attacks and special combos that only he can use.

Another character from another show, also named Son Gokū (from the anime Saiyuki) also wields the Nyoi-bō as he fights. The Nyoi-bō is also used by in Soul Calibur 3 by Hualin and created characters using the staff discipline.

Both weapons are taken from a similar weapon that Sun Wukong uses in the Chinese novel Journey to the West.
