Nykøbing-Rørvig municipality

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nykøbing-Rørvig municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in West Zealand County on the northwest coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in Denmark, at the mouth of the Isefjord. The municipality covers an area of 40 km², and has a total population of 7,610 (2005). Its mayor is Vagn Ytte Larsen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The site of its municipal council is the town of Nykøbing Sjælland.

Because the municipality is located at the end of a peninsula, its only neighboring municipality with land connection is Trundholm to the south. Neighboring municipality to the east Hundested is separated from Nykøbing-Rørvig by the waters of the Isefjord, and ferry service connects the municipality at the town of Rørvig northeast over Isefjord to the town of Hundested.

To the northwest of the municipality is Nyrup Bay (Nyrup Bugt) and Hesselø Bay (Hesselø Bugt), to the east is the Isefjord, and to the southeast is Nykøbing Bay (Nykøbing Bugt).

By January 1, 2007 Nykøbing-Rørvig municipality will cease to exist, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Dragsholm and Trundholm municipalities to form the new Odsherred municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 355 km² and a total population of 32,739 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
