Nycteras is one of the two main characters in George MacDonald's short story Photogen and Nycteras also known as The Day Boy and Night Girl.

Nycteras is 'The Night Girl' - a girl that the witch Whatu has kept in darkness all her life. The story is the tells of the bravery of their escape from the witch and how they come to help and ultimately love one another.
