[edit] History

The promotion was formed in Rochester, New York by independent pro wrestler Ian Decay in January 2003.

The first Rochester Pro Wrestling (RPW) show was "February Meltdown" on February 23, 2003 at the German House in Rochester, where Kevin Dunn defeated Ian Decay in the finals of a 2-round tournament to win the RPW Heavyweight Championship. RPW ran monthly shows and had their own training school located in downtown Rochester off of Portland Avenue.

In October 2003, RPW merged with Rochester promotion Kayfabe Dojo Wrestling (KDW), which was ran by Mike "Hellcat" Rosario. Rosario proceeded to promote shows under the RPW banner, but kept the "Kayfabe Dojo" name for the promotion's training facility. By early 2004, Decay had left the promotion, and Rosario changed its name to NWA Upstate. The first NWA Upstate show was held in May 2004 at the Ukrainian Club in Webster, New York, former home to the New Millennium Wrestling promotion.

In the fall of 2005, NWA Upstate began an interpromotional war with Buffalo area promotion Empire State Wrestling (ESW). The war ended in February 2006 when ESW folded operations. Rosario then opened a second fed, NWA Empire, which runs out of ESW's old home venue St. Johnsburg Firehall in North Tonawanda, NY and utilizes talent from both NWA Upstate and ESW.

Also in the fall of 2005, local promotion Roc City Wrestling (RCW) came to an agreement with NWA Upstate to provide a talent exchange. The deal also allowed RCW wrestlers to train at Upstate's Kayfabe Dojo and replaced The Tyger's Den and Next Era Wrestling as RCW's official training facility and sister fed. Several workers including Brodie Lee, Freddy Midnight, Triple X, The McClouds, and The Olsens started performing on RCW branded shows, and RCW's Czar, Marc Krieger, and Mookie crossed over to Upstate. However the exchange went sour in April 2006 and Rosario pulled all of his talent (including several RCW mainstays) from Roc City Wrestling, which ended up folding a few months later (See "Competition" below).

NWA Upstate moved its' bi-monthly shows to All Star Sports Arena in Irondequoit, New York in mid-2005. The last show at that venue was the 2006 Upstate-8 show on August 26, 2006. It was announced at that show that the fed was moving their shows to The Dome Center and Minnet Hall in Henrietta, NY. The first show held at the new venue was Monster's Brawl on October 7, 2006.

[edit] Competition

Competition in Rochester has always been intense. The original Kayfabe Dojo Wrestling was once at war with Rochester Pro Wrestling and Roc City Wrestling. After the KDW/RPW merger, All talent that was working for both RPW and RCW were told to choose, the majority chose RPW and RCW was left with a giant hole in their roster. Eventually RCW rebounded with new talent and an agreement with their original founder Johnny Swift, who had left the company by that time. Swift had since started up a training school called The Tyger's Den with head trainer Tyger Smith and a business name of Next Era Wrestling (NEW). The Tyger's Den and NEW operated independently from RCW and stayed out of their business affairs, but in the summer of 2005, Buffalo promotion Old School Pro Wrestling (which employed many NEW and RCW workers) was having management difficulties and Next Era Wrestling made the decision to run their own shows under the New York Athletic Commission guidelines. This created a rift between RCW and NEW which culminated in workers that performed for both being made to choose, and just like before, many choose to leave RCW.

A new chapter was written in October 2005 when not only did NEW run their first show, but NWA Upstate signed a talent exchange agreement with Roc City. This enabled many former RCW workers (like Brodie Lee, Freddy Midnight, Charisma, and Kid Justice) that left for RPW/Upstate to return. A local war was waged between NWA Upstate/RCW and NEW, with Upstate's attendance regularly outdrawing their competition 3-to-1. However in April 2006, the partnership between Upstate & RCW was dissolved, talent was once again told to choose, and a 3 way war was about to begin. It didn't take long before Roc City contacted NEW and attempted to mend fences, but it was too little too late. The RCW show immediately following the partnership featured several NEW employees, and RCW workers were allowed training time at The Tyger's Den prior to showtime, but the damage that was done to RCW in the locker room, the front office, and in the fan's eyes, were too much for Roc City Wrestling owner Curt Sawyer. RCW went on hiatus over the summer and soon announced that they would be unable to continue running as a separate entity, many of their talent moved on to either NWA Upstate or NEW, and the RCW website was scheduled to be officially taken down on November 1st, signaling the end of one of the longest running promotions in Upstate NY history, however, the site and the message board are still up.

The competition between the only two remaining feds in Rochester heated up in the fall of 2006 when NEW began to bring in name talent such as The Heart Throbs, Johnny Devine, Alex Shelley, Kamala, and MDogg20. Not to be outdone, Mike Rosario changed the date of an NWA Empire show to coincide with a joint NEW/OSPW show in Buffalo.
