Nuestros Derechos

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nuestros Derechos (meaning Our Rights in Spanish) is a Dutch thrash metal band, founded in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 2000 by Jerry Derechos (guitar, vocals), Jetti Derechos (bass guitar, vocals) and Johnny Derechos (drums, vocals).

The power trio is firmly rooted with one foot in a tradition of thrash metal and an other in the hardcore punk scene. The band like to act according to Do-It-Yourself principles including making and distributing music. Since 2000 Nuestros Derechos have been playing well-considered, engaged thrashcore, sometimes referred to as metalcore, which in a way sounds like the crossover similar to the '80s when punk rock and metal first met.

Mixing predominant elements of hardcore punk and metal, their style of music is similar to international thrash icons like Slayer, Kreator, DRI, and Dutch acts like Lunatics Without Skateboards Inc. (LWS), Flesh Made Sin, Crustacean, Outburst, Izegrim and Legion of the Damned (previously known under the moniker of Occult).

[edit] History

In the summer of 2000 all three members of Nuestros Derechos decide to play together in a jam session to see what happens. After the session they all agree: they might not altogether have a lot of experience or (playing) skills and technique, but chemistry is definitely there. It takes a while before they find a decent rehearsal studio, but on October 12, 2001 Nuestros Derechos make their live debut.

[edit] The first studio efforts

On the 29th of June 2003 the band’s first studio recordings take place. In one day the band records a demo with four songs at the PAN Recording Studios in Snelrewaard, Netherlands. It’s an all-tracks-at-once-recording to maintain the ‘live-sensation’. Studio engineer and producer Mario Vrooman tries to record all the noise. Later to be completed by adding a night’s recording of all vocals and a brave endeavour to mix it by Theo Vogelaars (known from bands as Tröckener Kecks and De Snevo's). Finally the recordings were mastered in a mere two hours by Manolo Honkoop (known from bands as Judgement Day, d’Upyoghurted and Warchitect).

Aptly titled PAN Recording Session, the recording gets critically acclaim from underground fanzines and mainstream press, including Holland's leading metal magazine Aardschok, which stated in issue 3 (March 2004):

"This band from Utrecht sounds pretty original because of the mid-eighties sound when the word crossover did not leave a filthy taste yet. (...) The three tracks, including the beautiful song Het Wijnglas, promise good times for this crossover band."

The aforementioned song Het Wijnglas, meaning The Wine-glass in Dutch, was originally written by composer Dirk Witte in 1917/1918. The anti-war lyrics (dealing with the First World War) make it probably the first protest song in the history of Dutch pop music. Unfortunately the evergreen is still topical.

[edit] The next steps

Despite the short and cheap production, the PAN Recording Session helped Nuestros Derechos to gain multiple live shows and landed them on several compilation albums, including Plankgas Punk (2003), Never Surrender, Never Give In (2004) and Punx.nl Pleurop Plaat volume 2 (2004). Nuestros Derechos' frequent and energetic live performance have brought the band all over the country, including festivals like From Beyond Metal Fest, Plankgas Punk Festival, Utreg Punk Festival, Occultfest and Trashfest.

[edit] The latest release: Split 'Em All

Nuestros Derechos' most recent recording, the split CD entitled Split 'Em All, is the result of the band teaming up with fellow thrashers De Waonzin. Late May 2005 both acts recorded and mixed four tracks each at the Bunt Studios in Utrecht, The Netherlands under the guidance of producer Menno Bakker (who has previously worked with Born From Pain, Sin Dios, NRA, Seein' Red, Bambix, Malkovich, Razor Crusade, The Apers, Makiladoras, Human Alert, among others).

Mastering duties were handled by Alan Douches at West West Side Music, who has previously offered his services to Sepultura, Shadows Fall, God Forbid, Sick Of It All, Converge, From Autumn To Ashes, Dillinger Escape Plan, Hatebreed, Nile and Unearth among others.

Containing four tracks by each band, this split release breathes the old-school feeling of the '80s all over, including the artwork and the album title, a reference to Metallica's classic 1983 album Kill 'Em All. The releases is strictly limited to 500 issues worldwide.

In May 2006 Juan Guillermo, bassist and co-founding member decides to part ways with the band. His successor is Jetti Derechos, who is also playing bass and co-fronting garagepunkcore group T.B.C.
