Quilapayún: Chilean Nueva Canción (New Song Movement) musical ensemble, recorded the famous Cantata by Luis Advis Vitaglich, Cantata Santa María de Iquique in 1970. The Cantata became known for its fusion of elements of classical music and andean folklore. The cantata was also narrated by the famous Chilean artist, Hector Devauchelle. They also recorded one of the most popular anthem's of the left written by Sergio Ortega: "El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido". (The People United Will Never Be Defeated). This song was later recorded in various languages and musical styles by different artists all over the world. Most importantly Frederic Rzweski, an american composer, composed 36 Variations on the song, in response to a commission from pianist Ursula Oppens for a work to complement Beethoven's 'Diabelli' Variations in a recital at the Kennedy Center. The 36 Variations on El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido! has also been recorded by the internationally renowned Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin.
