Ntoskrnl.exe is the core executable file in control of every Windows NT based Windows Operating System. The file name, once broken down, becomes "Nt os krnl". Nt deriving from the fact that it is built off of the Windows NT operating system, os deriving from the term operating system, and krnl deriving from the term kernel. The file extension of .exe derives from the Windows standard for the naming of executable files.
