[edit] Excellent job!
Hi, you are doing a truly excellent job! No need to apologize for anything (I am not even sure what are you apologizing for). We really badly need someone with native grasp of English. I myself make tons of mistakes and I would love if someone could clean it up. I set up the reference in the cuisine section. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. A little tip: to automatically sign your name just type 4 of these ~ (like this: ~~~~). If you need some help, just drop me a note, I will be happy to assist. I know that at first Wikipedia looks like a scary jungle of rules and policies, technical stuff and weird formating conventions. My talk page is here. See ya around! [edit] Shortages?
Hello! How are you? I noticed that you edited article Lithuanians with this particular sentence - Perhaps as a result of the shortages, the Lithuanians... - AFAIK Lithuanians do not suffer from any shortages or maybe I understand something wrongly? BTW, you have very nice copy/edit skills. M.K. 13:52, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for very quick answer. Yes indeed in soviet era were shortages. I initially thought that you talking about present times:). in this case, yes it would be better to add a note <during soviet era> M.K. 14:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC) P.S. More convenient place to leave the comments is user’s discussion page (second button on top) instead of the main one (first button).
- And maybe you also want to correct some mistakes here too>> Vilnius Castle Complex :D ?
Working on the Castle Complex ASAP! Aciu for the compliments. Novickas 16:03, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks!! M.K.
[edit] Stubs
There are 3 ways to deal with red links:
- create a stub and hope someone will expand it
- point to external site
- do nothing and leave red link to someone else to take care of
- don't link anywhere, remove the [[ ]] and pretend there is no need for such article.
What to do really depends on your personal preferences. All are fine, but 1 and 3 are most common.
Stub is a short article that could and should be expanded. The whole long thing is on Wikipedia:Stub. Officially, there is no such thing as "sub-stub." There was a proposal a long time ago, but it died. I just like the idea of it and find it useful. It is a class of stubs that are extremely short (1-3 sentences). See also article grading scheme. Hope that answers, Renata 16:20, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Ah, images. See, "Wikipedia-only" permison in not acceptable because Wikipedia is free (as in everybody can copy its content) and wants to remain such. So if you ask someone, you need to ask to release the image under GFDL, which means that anybody else can use the image for any purpose (note that "any" also includes commercial, and that stops most people). I don't have a lot of experience asking sites for permissions and I don't think there are any that granted "blanket" permissions, but what I gather is that most people don't really know copyrights and are quick to grant "Wikipedia-only." In short, it's quite messy. Easiest and cleanest way is to take pics yourself and release under some free license.
Quick tip: if you want to intent a para don't put a spece in front of
because it produces this ugly thing.
Instead, put :
- Here is one,
- Here are two,
- And that's three
- Here are two,

[edit] New small Copy/Edit ?
Hello! I am here again. I know it is not very nice to disturb people, but maybe you would be interested to look here too User:M.K/Laikinas? It is upcoming article in mine work space, i ma not sure is it not contain any writing errors, so I want to correct them prior launching them in proper place. M.K. 19:42, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Welcome back!
Hello and welcome back from holydays, I hope you had a good time. While I have no specific task, but we have plenty of work in general :) As you know we run this project, here you could find the articles which needing copy/edit, expansion or request of new articles etc, so just pick up some articles by your taste and to work! M.K. 20:34, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi, since you are looking for job, could you please take a look at my draft of History of Lithuania located here. I know that only about a third of the article is finished, but I would like to know that everything is fine with it. Also, if something is confusing unclear or looks irrelevant, let me know. I want the article to be as good as it gets :) Renata 00:52, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the question! That's because GDL reached the Black Sea after 1400, while the article deals with a bit earlier period. But I agree, it needs clarification. Anything else? Please be as picky as you can :) Renata 15:05, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you! I am really in no hurry, there is no chance I am going to finish it up till next weekend. Thanks for the notes. I know it needs more maps, pictures, timelines and all the other nice things. But that's for later, when the text will be finished. Also the lead will have to be adjusted quite a bit once the text is finalized.
- The long coins are really long. And they are not really coins. That's just something people used in trade. Here is a pic.
- As for the orders, it's really tedius to name them every time... But thanks again! You vocabularly is far more advanced than mine ;) Renata 21:12, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
for the edits of my text 'Aukstojas Hill'. A non-native speaker seldom realises how awkward he speaks/writes :) Juozas Rimas 05:52, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
For the Aukštėjas/Aukštojas issue see: http://ml.lms.lt/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=70&Itemid=61&limit=11&limitstart=0
I have little quotable geographic information on Aukštojas at hand right now. Its general orientation is south-east from Vilnius but it is by no means exact by compass. At the age of perhaps 9-10 years, I visited Juozapinė Hill as a member of the group of cyclists who went from the Cathedral Square in Vilnius to Juozapinė Hill. I was assigned the task of carrying some soil from the center of Vilnius (perhaps from the hill of the Gediminas Castle, I can't remember now) in a little decorated bag and spilling it at Juozapinė. As the then-unnamed-and-uknown Aukštojas is near Juozapinė, the overall picture was boring beige hills with little prominence. I'll perhaps do a cycling trip sometime to take the picture of Aukštojas just for the record.
BTW, what part of the US are you from? I spent a couple of weeks during my honeymoon this summer in Utah. Enjoyed every moment! Also visited Las Vegas, New York and northern Arizona. We two had a great roadtrip by car all by ourselves. I was particularly amazed by the real mountains that I saw for the first time in my life spent in the Lithuanian flatlands.Juozas Rimas 21:46, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Regarding Migūnai forestry and Aukštojas Hill: I have no information on the forestry, just took the information from http://www.miskai.lt/index.php?id=67. As far as I understand, all forests in Lithuania are divided into forestries "girininkijos" which are in turn divided into smaller units "eiguvos".Juozas Rimas 20:43, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello! It is really sad, I personally do not know that to do with this issue, Renata was one of the most valuated contributors. We should hope that she will come back one day. Now we should reinforce our efforts in projects, which she left. M.K. 22:20, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RE:The Big Picture
I am writing a bit different article, not for general Lithuanian history . But info which I use could be used in general Lit. history and vice versa too M.K. 15:23, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bigos
Sauerkraut is essential for Polish bigos. I'd expect it to be in Lithuanian bigos as well, as the "cuisine culture" is largely shared between the two nations. But let's leave it to Lithuanian editors to confirm or correct this. I'd be surprised to see bigos in "the West" (Western Europe or the US). I think its preparation recipe was actually against the EU regulations (because good bigos needs to be old and reheated many times). It's certainly a dish that you can order in any restaurant in Poland, but I've never met it in Lithuania. --Lysytalk 18:41, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Lithuanian cuisine
Congratulations on Lithuanian cuisine. I've just read it and I believe your copyedit enriched it a lot. Yes, still there's room for improvement, I'm sure :-) --Lysytalk 20:24, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Hello! First about Lithuanian cuisine article, I suggest also adding kučiukai (or šlyžikai) also it is quite traditional some sort of desert :) , talking about borrowed dishes I missed – šašlykai which should be roasted on birchen woods. Besides the century (17) of potatoes, when were introduced in Lithuania, should be closely examined. About photo of honey Image:Runny hunny.jpg, sadly I do not have Lithuanian beehives, but you can request this photo in proper section of wikiprject Lithuania. About word biciuliai, yes this word is still used to describe the good friends. I remember that Valdas Adamkus received a beehives with bees from Viktor Yushchenko. About word numire – this word is most common when dealing with death, it also used to animals and humans; plus there is another word pastipo which is used to describe death of bigger animals like dogs, but this word is not used lets say for bees (personally I did not heard that anybody would say mano bites pastipo); there are few more words. Maybe numire should be translated as died? M.K. 19:17, 29 September 2006 (UTC) p.s. i have no wikistress at all :) but thanks for your concern.
- I have a pleasure to eat šašlykai last weekend:). Kučiukai is small pieces of roasted dough with the poppy seed. All these small roasted pieces are put into the grinded poppy seed mass, which water. Eating during the Kučios. these are Kuciukai M.K. 20:06, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
Hey, did I hear a bit of nostalgia in your last sentence on mine talk? Yeah, it was in family sodas :) but with wine...this time. As I see you already figured about how to upload images; maybe these tutorials could help you in the future: Help:Contents/Images and media and as you see a bot made a notice that you forgot to add license (I fix it) , you also could familiarize with these: Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. cya M.K. 09:15, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hello! Yes dektine is legal, no doubt about it. About images, it is quite difficult question, but I will try to find out how to deal with it, in particular case as yours. Yup, it would be great if more people could participate here! M.K. 16:17, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Hello! I reread and rethought issues regarding paintings and photos. And I think that then you have or own painting and by taking photo of it and uploading taken photo in wikipedia you should placed a tag some sort like PD-self with proper explanation in Source place. But this is only mine ideas, they could be wrong. M.K. 21:50, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] License tagging for Image:Kuciukai.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Kuciukai.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 00:07, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Vandalism warning
Hi, thanks for your help in cleaning up vandalism.
I know how frustrating and irritating it is when people vandalise our hard work, but please, I urge you to set your anger aside and take it easy on the newcomers.
I am referring to the warning that you left on this talk page. In my opinion, the edit was not serious enough to warrant a level 4 warning after only a single prior vandalism warning. I realise that the comment could have been a personal affront to you, but please do not take it personally. There are guidelines to how to deal with vandalism and I encourage you to follow these no matter how angry or affronted you may feel.
Also, unsigned messaged are considered rude. Please sign your message and date stamp it by adding four tildes (~~~~) after any message left on a user's talk page.
Once again, thanks for helping to keep Wikipedia vandalism free.
Regards LittleOldMe 10:59, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry if I did not follow the proper protocol for warning messages.
- No need to apologise, you were operating in good faith
- Does this protocol apply to all cases?
- No, there are exceptions. In this instance, the worst warning I would use would be:
- {{subst:blatantvandal}} ~~~~
- You can use {{subst:test4im}} ~~~~ as a first warning "for extreme cases of vandalism". The tendency would be to class extreme vandalism as multiple edits to multiple articles which are designed to evade detection. The person would subtly change names, dates, add nonsense masquerading as facts, and perhaps delete some text. This type of edit is not easy to identify as vandalism and often goes undetected. When it is discovered we tend to check all the other recent contributions for that user or IP. If multiple instances of this type of vandalism is discovered then we would post a "This is the only warning you will receive!" message since it is obvious that it was a calculated act of vandalism.
-
- Swearing and profanity are not classed as extreme vandalism, nor is it always blatant vandalism. Often, new users will read an article with which they strongly disagree and add comments to the article itself, sometimes expressing themselves in colourful language. In these instances we might not even warn them, instead we point them to the discussion page after reverting their edits. This is the way we "assume good faith". Only if the user persists and shows that they are intent on damaging the articles do we escalate to calling the edits vandalism.
- Sometimes it's hard to wait for a bot to come along and fix it.
- You don't have to wait for a bot to fix it, you are encouraged to fix vandalism when you find it. The bots are far from perfect and they often miss instances of vandalism that are not immediately obvious.
-

[edit] WP:LITH
Probably the best place to ask for images is WP:LITH, we have special section for request. Hope it helps. M.K. 17:37, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- I am not sleeping yet :) Likely Vilkmergė has a combination of two words: Vilkas (wolf) and Merga (+- girl) and we have Wolf`s girl, but the deeper linguistically research should be done to identified combinations properly. M.K. 19:04, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merge of Phantom Ranch
Great job on your merge of Phantom Ranch! I've been afraid to do it since I proposed it, and was happy to come home from work and see it done so well. Again, kudos! Notary137 02:13, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- I got it to redirect properly now. The redirect statement redirected the article to itself. Not a problem.
- I do have pictures of Phantom Ranch. I thought the existing pics in the article looked good, but I can find a couple of my best ones to compliment it. I will be down there again in January (camping), and I hope to get some good wintry-looking pictures before I freeze out there! I have read Death in Grand Canyon, though I waited some time before doing so (easily recognizing the irony of having the book in my car should something happen to me on one of my hikes, and so resisted buying it for more than a year.) However, I found it full of cautionary tales on what not to do while hiking in the Grand Canyon or other desert environments, so my apprehension was unnecessary. Notary137 19:30, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Funny that you mention about the picture type, see my note on the article's talk page. Since I'm going to be there in January, I can get a good photo from the Clear Creek Trail at Phantom Overlook when there is no foliage, so you can see all the buildings. Now I can't wait! Notary137 19:55, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Topo maps
I can add the link. I'll test it on a page later tonight (Hermit Trail) and see if it works. Notary137 17:58, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Added something neat to Hermit Trail. There was a template to use, {{geoscale-US-mountain}} which links to TopoZone, Google Maps, TerraServer, etc. Scale for TopoZone is not ideal for trails, so I'm thinking of adding a Template:geolinks-US-trails, changing the sacle to what is used on your link on Phantom Ranch. It looks like a rainy day tomorrow in Las Vegas, so I just might get it done! Notary137 00:22, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Created the template {{geolinks-US-trails}}, I mostly changed things like map size and scale. I already applied it to Hermit Trail and will move forward with others. We're getting a lot of rain down here this morning... Notary137 16:39, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ergh...?
You are not thinking of leaving, are you? I noticed you removed yourself from the Portal:Lithuania guestbook... Wonder why and if you are ok... Renata 23:39, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, maybe not entirely but thanks for your concern. I can see that I've been spoiled by my boss, husband, friends, and children, to the point where it's a shock to not get cooperation, thanks, hugs, etc. These things are not forthcoming in Wikipedia - it's just not a very warm place. There are other paths to "žmonių gėrybei" that are probably better suited to me. But planning to finish up a few more items. Sincerely, Novickas 16:38, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Agh, yeah, I know what you are talking about. Yes, WP is a very cold and lonely place. If you work hard and write good articles, no one will thank or even notice you. If you mess up something, you will be screemed at. If you troll and vandalize, you will get all the attention you want. Anyhow, it was good to have you here, thanks for all your help, and I hope "neminėsit blogu žodžiu." A month ago I would have said: "Oh no! Don't go, you are needed here." Today I say: "Run! Before it's not too late." Renata 17:02, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Please, don`t leave! M.K. 19:12, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Thanks guys. If you want me to edit something I would be happy to do so. Novickas 15:36, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
It's ok to chat. I need to do that more often myself :) I printed out the Jungle, maybe I'll read it - first few pages seem hard to follow though. I found about it like a year ago when one of my classmates was studying it for the English class. I was so surprised! Somehow no one talks about it in Lithuania.
On evolution. You should have met me before I came to the U.S. I am completely new person now. On WP, you should have met me before the PL-LT wars started. I was a lot friendlier and nicer back then. Now I feel like a grumpy old lady :) WP is a very hostile place to live in. So many strangers, so many rude people, so many upset people. Add different cultures, education, and opinions, mix in nationalities and bake it in the oven of very limited communication (no face-to-face interaction) and sprinkle with personal issues and you'll get a nice pie called WP community. But for whatever reason (still don't understand myself) that pie is very addictive...
A bright future, you say? Hm, that'd be good. Can I order two to go and do you accept credit cards? :) I don't really know how you came to that conclusion, but hey, thanks. Renata 23:44, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
- Mind if I pop in here, uninvited ? About the WP community and POV conflicts. It's an eye-opener for me, but you really need a good perspective to appreciate this. After the initial shock, you start to realize, that the conflicting points of view can be often equally justified. One can learn a lot more than from books, all the TV/news crap or even the educated chats with your friends. One has only to often remind oneself that the backgrounds and cultures are different and people can act differently. If only there were less aggression ... Cheers. --Lysytalk 18:21, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Maps
If you have in mind maps such as image:LietuvaVilnius.png, then they were made by administrator of Lithuanian Wikipedia, User:Knutux. I guees you can ask him on his Lithuanian talk. Renata 14:10, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
- That's why I said use the Lithuanian talk Renata 14:28, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A request
Hello,
if you remember, we have had some brief communication on Lithuanian geography. I also noticed you have in some cases proof-read wiki articles related to Lithuania. When you have some spare time, could you take a look at the page on Žirmūnai, my native borough in Vilnius? I co-authored it to make it the most extensive article on Vilnius' boroughs. I know it's weird the article on the Old Town is now smaller :)
The page is pretty clean of spelling mistakes, but I bet there are tons of incorrect articles ;) Juozas Rimas 20:30, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
By the way, regarding the Žirmūnai article, is there a more suitable word in English instead of "ferry" to convey the idea of the ships cruising in the small Neris River. You can see the ship in one of the photos on the page. "Ferry" sounds like a huge bulky barge which transports people and cars over a big body of water, whereas the ships in Neris are old, relatively small Soviet "cruise" river ships that go to and fro in the river with passengers only. I used the term "motor ship" but I bet it sounded weird, perhaps like jet-ski? :)
Hello! When you have some spare time, please drop by the Žirmūnai article which has been consirably supplemented and could benefit gretaly from your English-check. ;) Juozas Rimas 16:58, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the check of Žirmūnai! I have edited some places where the meaning was distorted a bit. I've also had added a new paragraph on an obscure Soviet-time pontoon-bridge tragedy. Juozas Rimas 07:37, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Hello! After some more expansion, we are approaching satiation with the Žirmūnai :) I've also hashed up a short lead section. Your copy-edit would be very welcome, especially for the lead. Juozas Rimas 12:58, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi, you did a great job on the Žirmūnai article! However, I had to remove the bit from the Age Cohorts which implied that Russians live shorter in Lithuania than Lithuanians - do we have such information? (WHO statistics are on Russia, as a country). I'm also not sure about the attractiveness of Žirmūnai to retirees. From my everyday observations, the high average age comes due to the people who came to live here in the 1960s being very settled. But today, when appartments in Žirmūnai are expensive, many retirees actually sell their appartments and go to a cheaper place to live. What do you think? Juozas Rimas 16:19, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi, the crime rates are even lower now (2006 data) - a 24-percent decline. I'll add the info tomorrow, together with the crime types breakdown. Juozas Rimas 22:49, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi, when you have time, for the sake of completeness, you could return the interesting figures on the crime rates in the US and Canada to Žirmūnai article. I have just updated the crime statistics, fixing my mistakes. The rate is not 20, but close to 50... I hope I'm not mistaken again. I'm not strong at maths :) Make sure you adjust the US figures down to "per 1,000 residents", because I saw they were given on the "per 100,000 residents" scale. Juozas Rimas 17:46, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Your note
Argh, sorry for getting back so late. I am really not sure what you are talking about with those south-noth arrows. I don't think I have seen them. You should take screenshot next time, I would be able to tell much more. As for game - there was a similar game somewhere on WP, long ago, can't find a link. In short, some people just have way too much time on their hands. Luckily some people use it in some productive way (like writing Wikipedia ) Renata 04:54, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Wow, National Park Service Rustic looks great! Nice use of images, too. Happy to remove the cleanup tag :) --Bookgrrl 00:43, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Answers
Hello! Some time pasted from your last note, it is good to see that you still with us. Sadly, but there is no public domain Governmental sites in Lithuania, IFAIK. But it depends on which information you need to access from them; they could hold some info which is not protected by copyright. Regarding www.vilnius.lt - it works fine with my tools. Firstly I suggest you to press ctr (and) F5. Sometimes it helps. It is also usefully to have new version of browser, did you tried new Internet Explorer 7? (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx). Try these messures. Cya. M.K. 23:24, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Postmodern architecture
Hey Novickas, I noticed the references, links, and rewording you just added to this article and wanted to say thanks. I've been wanting to improve that article myself, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Again thanks, DVD+ R/W 14:42, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Symbols
Hi, I don't have much time to work on the article, but I think it is a pretty good idea, just needs A LOT of work. Maybe I will find few minutes over the weekend. I am just not sure about the Kukutis... I don't think he is that famous to qualify as a national symbol. BTW, great photo of Rupintojelis! :) Renata 15:59, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hello! Sorry for delay to answering to your question and request I will take deep look at article tomorrow eee...today but only in morning :) I am veeeery busy these days, so mine participation is a bit halted now. Cya soon! M.K. 01:03, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hello again! I read your article and have few suggestion: firstly it would be worth to note about six angle cross, for instance it is used it Order of Vytis: Image:Cross_of_Vytis.jpg, also six angle cross is the symbol of Lithuanian military. In text it is mentioned that Vytis is used and in coins, maybe it worth to place a picture of these coins. Maybe also references should be harmonized a bit, but this is not very important.
