- 1981 - Antigua and Barbuda gain independence from the United Kingdom.

- 1990 - A New York City civil jury awards Sandra Miller only $100 for battery, after an incident in which pro boxer Mike Tyson allegedly seized her breasts and insulted her; the jury found Tyson's behavior "not outrageous".

- 1994 - George Lucas leaves the day-to-day operations of his film-making business, and he starts a sabbatical. While on sabbatical, he writes the prequel section of the Star Wars movies.
