Nova 96.9 is a commercial radio station based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is owned by DMG Radio Australia, and promises to play 'never more than two ads in a row', a policy that it claims to strictly adhere to. It can be noted that Nova tends to have more ad blocks than other stations. However the total number of ads played is reported to be significantly less than other commercial FM stations in the Sydney area[1].

[edit] Station format

Before its establishment in 2001, the Sydney radio market was considered by many to be bland, no new commercial licenses having been given for 25 years. One of the driving forces behind the creation of Nova was the growing demographic of youth who were embracing the commercialised anti-pop movement fronted by such artists as Daft Punk & Spiderbait, but for whom Triple J had no commercial incentives to offer.

Initially the music was very similar to Triple J's style. A number of the station presenters were Ex ABC Triple J staff.

However Triple J retained its alternative style, while Nova has drifted towards a more commercial format and other stations adopted Nova's more varied playlist, to the point where Nova now is hard to tell apart from other commercial FM stations. Along with its sister stations Nova 100 Melbourne, Nova 91.9 Adelaide, Nova 106.9 Brisbane and Nova 93.7 Perth, Nova now claims to be Australia's leading under 40's brand.[2]
