[edit] History

[edit] The creation of the City of Shirakami backfired

The city was originally scheduled to merge with all municipalities from the Yamamoto District(which will dissolve if the merger was completed) to form the new city of Shirakami. This merger plan had some serious problems with the UNESCO(Who enlisted the mountains which the name was came from) and the two prefectures (Akita and Aomori, where the mountains lie) Also, people from the Aomori Prefecture almost filed suit against Noshiro and all municipalities from Yamamoto District, Akita. On January 31, 2006, the merger committee was forced to dissolve.[1]

Recently, the town of Futatsui has announced that it will merge with the City of Noshiro to create a new city, also called Noshiro. The new city was created on March 21, 2006.[2]

Other than this merger, on March 20, 2006, Hachiryu, Kotoka, and Yamamoto have already merged together to create the new town of Mitane. And finally on March 27, 2006, the municipalities of Hachimori and Minehama is scheduled to merge together to create a new town called Happo.
