[edit] Kven

For quite a long time 1-2 editors write the Kven article, which basically claims that Kvens/Cwens permeated whole Northern Europe.. I have reasons to believe that it is original reasearch and POV-pushing. I periodically delete some really abnormal claims related to countries outside Scandinavia. Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge of Northern European history and not a single expert with second opinion editis this article. Please help. mikka (t) 20:34, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Requested articles (to be created)

When creating an article from this list, please try to provide some more information than what the person looking up the topic can be expected to already know. In general, try to submit two or three paragraphs, or at least five sentences of main text.

Some also prefer that you provide a reference pointing to the source of the information, and put the article in a Category.

The following articles are very short, three sentences or less. Some of them can be considered substubs. Some of them have recently been created from the list of requests above, others have been around longer. All would benefit from being expanded.

[edit] Possible candidates for deletion

  • RENAC Society - Looks like webpage-vanity to me. Originaly it claimed it was a "press agency" (I edited it). I tried to get it deleted once, but it was kept as a "no consensus" seeing as no one "dared" to vote on it becase they didn't understand Norwegian. If a few more people here agree with me we should try nominating it again (it sure doesn't pass the "infamous" Alexa test mentioned on Wikipedia:Websites). Alternatively someone rely should expand the article if you think it's worth keeping. --Sherool 16:26, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
Probably not notable. Searching for RENAC + Aalesund gives 2060 hits. Looks like the majority of those are hotlinking of pictures. Fornadan (t) 22:10, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
Highly dubious article, yes. Not something to put in an encyclopedia. --Wernher 21:54, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
Redirected to Aalesunds F.K. now. Sam Vimes 18:01, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Oh my, strange indeed. It's a notable geographic feature though, so while most of the content gotta go I think we should be eable to salvage the article by simply re-writing it into a stub, more or less from scratch though. I'll just tag it as {{cleanup-rewrite}} for now, I'll look at it tomorow if no one beats me to it (going to bed).--Sherool 00:53, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
I've re-written it now, still very stubby though, so I'll just list it for expantion here as well. --Sherool 23:30, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
  • Gromguten - being the Norwegian wrestling champion does not constitute notability, do you agree? Punkmorten 19:35, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
I like the part that says: "Finishing Moves: Telemarksnedslag, Fossefall, Hallingspark"... - Soulkeeper 17:35, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Winter sports reporting

After the participants reach a consensus, the discussion under this heading will be transferred to the talk page, and a summary put here.

Hi! I have been thinking a little about trying to motivate fellow winter sports enthusiasts across Scandinavia and Europe in general to report results to the current sports events page—if not for any other reason than to alleviate the heavy baseball, Am. football, cricket, rugby, and football (soccer) bias on said page. Myself, I love to watch biathlon, but I also like other ski sports. But to report each and every ski sport result single handedly is a little too much...

So, I consider posting this message, or one like it, on the WKP notice boards of Sweden, Finland, Russia, Belarus, Germany (all ski sports); France and Ukraine (biathlon); Austria (alpine skiing and ski jumping), Switzerland, and Italy (alpine skiing), Poland (ski jumping); and perhaps a couple more countries? (I do think I've got most of the "relevant" nations covered in this list, though). Tell me what you think. --Wernher 04:36, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Is there a need to differentiate between events? For instance, Italy is prominent in cross-country and biathlon too, no need to single out alpine skiing. Also, don't forget the Czech Republic. And perhaps speed skating should be included in the scope? Just a few thoughts.
Something we can do to boost the coverage of said sports is to create more bios of Winter Olympians. Many of these can be translated from Norwegian or German Wikipedias. Recently I did a major overhaul on categorization etc. in this field. Punkmorten 18:59, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Well thought'n'said. The reason I singled out alpine skiing for the Italians was simply that I felt that that sport would have a higher chance of being interesting to Italian wikipedians. But perhaps wikipedians from northern Italy are equally enthusiastic about the XC disciplines, I don't know. My general rationale for limiting the sports mentioned to the most popular in each specific country (and referring to the other winter sports as a whole) was that there might then be a better chance of the wikipedians receiving the message to jump right in and start reporting.
Speed skating I plainly forgot about (but I sure remembered it last night when watching the world record class WC event from "Salt Lake Olympic Oval" on TV). :-) Also forgot about the Czechs; they have good ski jumpers and XC skiers. And the Estonians, too, have many good XC skiers. --Wernher 17:37, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
And Japan (ski jumping, Nordic combined). Punkmorten 14:52, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Update: I have now put in some effort in the Current sports events page's Current and Upcoming events sections (placed in the pink listbox to the right); now there's at least some skiing events listed. I did some 'subsectioning' so that the Cricket, Rugby, and College football items won't swamp everything else (as it undeniably did before). I'll try to come up with a concise and inspiring 'call to arms' before long (as discussed above), to put in the Announcements section of the potentially interested Wikipedians' regional notice boards. --Wernher 04:32, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

On this topic, I've just created Norway at the 2006 Winter Olympics (the other countries to have such pages were Australia, Canada, Israel, United States, and, interestingly, Belarus). Might be a useful page to have during the Olympics (assuming we're not all sitting in front of the TV...) Sam Vimes 17:58, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Does anyone know the copyright status of images taken during the Oslo 1952 Winter Olympics (eg [1])? Thanks, Andjam 16:21, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Whoops, I just realised that the photo was probably published in Australia, which may be a better route for public domain status. Andjam 16:29, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List of villages in Norway

I have now created the mammoth List of villages in Norway! Inspired by the coverage in the United States and articles like Hibberts, Maine, we should list every populated place in Norway, and this is the goal of this list. It is based upon a 2005 SSB release.

Please help out with completion of this list! See also Talk:List of villages in Norway. Punkmorten 09:09, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Norwegian Members of Parliament

In addition I imported the Template:Stortinget 2005-2009 from the Norwegian Wikipedia. We should definitely have articles for all 169 members, all of which may be translated from no:wiki. Punkmorten 11:26, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alternative words for Germans

Does Norwegian have alternative words for Germans, as in slang? If so please add them, with a small explanation and perhaps translation at the following article: Alternative words for Germans. Thanks in advance, Rex 15:02, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
