Northwest Association of Accredited Schools

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Northwest Association of Accredited Schools is an association based in Boise, Idaho which accredits distance education, elementary, foreign nation, high, K-12, middle, postsecondary nondegree granting, special purpose, supplementary education, travel education, and trans-regional schools.

The Northwest Association accredits schools in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah and Washington. Schools in foreign nations that enjoy accreditation include: Mexico and Jamaica and Western Samoa.

The Association has attracted controversy due to its accreditation of WWASPS schools, which have been accused of child abuse and other maltreatment of students.

Formerly known as the Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges and Universities, this Association is not to be confused with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Initially the Association was known as the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools until 1974, and then the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NASC) until 2000, and finally was known as the Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges and Universities (NASCU) until 2004, when the Association for Schools and the Association for Colleges and Universities unincorporated and became two separate entities (the Northwest Association for Accredited Schools and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities). The current name was adopted at that time.

The Northwest Association of Accredited Schools is not recognised by the United States Department of Education.
