Northfield is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the city population was 7,725.

Northfield is located at GR1.
(39.370066, -74.554118)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.9 km² (3.5 mi²). 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.58%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,725 people, 2,824 households, and 2,109 families residing in the city. The population density was 869.6/km² (2,254.9/mi²). There were 2,922 housing units at an average density of 328.9/km² (852.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.52% White, 2.65% African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.50% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.81% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.38% of the population.
There were 2,824 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $56,875, and the median income for a family was $62,896. Males had a median income of $43,227 versus $30,227 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,059. About 4.4% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.5% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over.

The Mayor of Northfield is Frank Perri, Jr. The City Council President and at-large member is Vincent Mazzeo. Other members of the City Council are: Council Members Ward 1: Tim Carew, Andy Clinton and Harold Kauffman; and Council Members Ward 2: Steven Vain, Cindy Kern and Michael Turon.[1]
[edit] Federal, state and county representation
Northfield is in the Second Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 2nd Legislative District.[2]
New Jersey's Second Congressional District, covering all of Atlantic County, Cape May County, Cumberland County and Salem County and portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Gloucester County, is represented by Frank LoBiondo (R, Vineland). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Robert Menendez (D, Hoboken).
The 2nd legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by William Gormley (R) and in the Assembly by Francis J. Blee (R, Absecon) and Jim Whelan (D, Atlantic City). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).
Atlantic County's County Executive is Dennis Levinson. The executive, along with the Board of Chosen Freeholders, administers all county business. Atlantic County's Freeholders are Francis Sutton, James Curcio, Frank Finnerty (Freeholder Vice Chairman), Alisa Cooper, Joe Kelly, Rev. Lawton Nelson, Thomas Russo, Sue Schilling and Joseph F. Silipena (Freeholder Chairman).

Students in grades K - 8 are served by the Northfield Community Schools. Schools in the district (with 2004-05 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) are Northfield Community Elementary School serving 609 students in grades K-4 and Northfield Community Middle School which serves grades 5-8 and has 610 students.
Students in grades 9 - 12 attend the Mainland Regional High School, and which serves students from Linwood, Northfield and Somers Point. The high school is located in Linwood.
