The current competition consists of 20 rounds with finals.

The NTFL was formed after the former Tasmanian Football League (Statewide League) split into 2 north and south leagues out of the former North Western Football Union.

The Northern Tasmanian Football League is considered to be one of the strongest leagues in the state and has a strong supporter following. Games in the NTFL average around 500 spectators.
