Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE

Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) is a TAFE institute located in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It has six city campuses located at Preston, Collingwood, Epping, Fairfield, Greensborough, Heidelberg, a country campus at Ararat, and several country training facilities.
A wide selection of study options are offered from pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and traineeships through to certificate, diploma, advanced diploma level, and bachelor degrees. In 2004 more than 28,000 students studied at NMIT at over 450 courses, under the direction of 1,240 teaching and support staff.
Faculties at NMIT include Arts and Social Sciences, Building and Construction, Business, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Further Education, and Tourism and Hospitality.

[edit] History of Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE
The direct antecedents of NMIT are Preston College of TAFE and Collingwood College of TAFE which amalgamated in 1988 with the Parkville horticulture campus. The new organisation was called Northern Metropolitan College of TAFE. Initial campuses were at Preston, Collingwood and Parkville with the Institute developing new campuses at Heidelberg, Greensborough and Epping. A further name change toNorthern Melbourne Institute of TAFE occurred in 1996, with the NMIT acronym adopted in 1999. Training centres at Eden Park and Yan Yean were developed. In 2002 a new campus was opened in Ararat, and a new training centre at Yarra Glen in the Yarra Valley. 2004 saw the Parkville campus close and a new campus start at Fairfield.

The institute’s main campus is located at Preston on St Georges Road. Other urban campuses are at Collingwood, Epping, Fairfield, Greensborough, and Heidelberg. A Victorian regional campus is located in Ararat. Rural Training centres are located at Yarra Glen, Eden Park, Yan Yean, Whittlesea, Strathbogie Ranges and Northern AMEP at Broadmeadows.
It has been propsed that the department of Design Drafting & Interior Fittings be moved to the Greensborough Campus ready for study in 2007.
[edit] Courses offered at NMIT
A full range of vocational short courses, and nationally accedited part time and full time Certificate and Diploma courses are offered including the Advanced Diploma of Music Performance. Notable alumni of the Music Performance Advanced Diploma include band members of Augie March and singer songwritersClayton Howard and Rachael Byrnes
As a specialist institute in primary industries NMIT offers degrees in Bachelor of Applied Aquaculture, Bachelor of Equine Studies, and Bachelor of Viticulture & Winemaking. In 2004 NMIT won its second wine Gold medal, for the Strathbogie Ranges B Shiraz at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Wine Show.
In 2006 NMIT is developing a course for a Bachelor of Music (Contemporary Australian Music) with other degree courses under consideration or development in business, information technology, and hospitality management.
