Northbridge was first settled in 1823 and was officially incorporated in 1735.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 46.8 km² (18.1 mi²). 44.5 km² (17.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it (4.87%) is water.

Per capita income for the town was $22,515. About 4.3% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.9% of those under age 18 and 6.4% of those age 65 or over.
