North Sydney is a suburb and commercial district in the Local Government Area of North Sydney Council on the North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
It is located about three kilometers north of the Sydney central business district, to which it is directly linked by road and rail across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The commercial district of North Sydney includes the second largest concentration of office buildings in New South Wales, with a large representation from the advertising and information technology industries.
Unlike other major suburban hubs within the Sydney metropolitan area, North Sydney has limited shopping facilities, with no department stores, only two medium sized supermarkets (Aldi & IGA), and almost no Sunday trading. A number of food and drink companies have outlets in North Sydney including Subway, Starbucks, Gloria Jeans and Boost Juice to name a few. The main shopping complex is the Greenwood Shopping Centre which is connected to North Sydney station. Advertising, marketing businesses and associated trades such as printing have tradionally dominated the business life of the area though these have been supplanted to a certain extent by information technology businesses. Corporations whose offices are in North Sydney include Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems and Optus (Optus is soon to relocate out of the area).
Local primary schools are North Sydney Demonstration School & St Mary's. Local high schools include the government selective North Sydney Boys and North Sydney Girls High Schools, the Catholic Marist College North Shore and independent Monte Sant' Angelo, Wenona School and Sydney Church of England Grammar School ("Shore"). St Aloysius' College of Milson's Point and Loreto Kirribilli are also within the confines of the North Sydney Local Government Area. Post-secondary education providers include the Australian Catholic University, Raffles KvB Institute and Billy Blue College. Prominent places of worship in the suburb include St Mary's Catholic Church and St Thomas' Anglican Church.
The North Sydney local government area includes the suburb of North Sydney and the surrounding suburbs of Crows Nest, Wollstonecraft, Waverton, Neutral Bay, McMahons Point, Kirribilli, Cremorne (divided between North Sydney & Mosman), and Cammeray. North Sydney Council has one of the lowest council rates in Australia, partly due to the strong business presence in the area, and partly due to the rates being at a cyclical low when the State Govermnent began restriciting and regulating rent increases. The current (2004) Prime Minister of Australia chooses to live in the official Prime Minister's Sydney residence known as Kirribilli House, which is located in the suburb of Kirribilli which is adjacent to the North Sydney area, and owns his own house in Wollstonecraft, also in the area.
