North Head, New Zealand

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

North Head is a volcanic cone headland in the jurisdiction of North Shore City, New Zealand, in the suburb of Devonport at the east end of the Waitemata Harbour (Auckland's harbour).

The old volcanoe cone's scoria material has been altered by various generations of people. First used by Māori, one of whose ancestral wakas was reputed to have put ashore close by, it was later on taken over by the military, who built extensive coastal fortifications here during the 'Russian scare' of the late 1900s. Several batteries of coastal guns (for example a 64 pound disappearing gun) were built, but never used in anger.

Today, the area has been turned into a public park, with good views of Rangitoto and Auckland due to its prominent height. Various parts of the tunnel networks connecting the batteries also prove a draw to inquisitive tourists, though the tunnels are not lighted, and torches will have to be brought to explore them.
