North Greenbush, New York

North Greenbush is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 10,805 at the 2000 census.

The Town of North Greenbush is located in the northwest part of the county. The town is southeast of the City of Troy. North Greenbush borders both Troy and the City of Rennselaer. Interstate 90 passes through the southwest corner of the town.

The first settlers were tenants of Rensselaerwyck, who arrived around 1640. The town was created from the Town of East Greenbush (then the original "Town of Greenbush") in 1855.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.3 km² (19.0 mi²). 48.4 km² (18.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (1.74%) is water.

The west town line is marked by the Hudson River with Albany County, New York on the opposite shore.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 10,805 people, 4,161 households, and 2,916 families residing in the town. The population density was 223.2/km² (578.0/mi²). There were 4,336 housing units at an average density of 89.6/km² (232.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.81% White, 1.01% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.85% of the population.

There were 4,161 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $55,422, and the median income for a family was $62,845. Males had a median income of $40,872 versus $29,743 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,025. About 2.0% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and 2.5% of those age 65 or over.

  • Wynantskill -- A village on the north town line by the town's northeast corner.
