North Carolina Highway 90 (also known as NC 90) is a sixty-six mile North Carolina State Highway. It is the only State Highway in NC to have an unpaved portion; this coming in the western Applachain mountains.

[edit] Current Route

Officially, the western terminus is at US 221 in Avery County, but a lack of signing makes it hard to judge. The first seven miles of the state highway are unpaved. Sixty-six miles after its inception, NC 90 ends at US 21/64 in Statesville. Major towns it hits on the way are Lenoir andTaylorsville, North Carolina.

[edit] Historical Info

  • 1928: The current route of NC 90 begins to form as it is extended through Statesville to NC 18 in Lenoir.
  • 1933: The eastern segment of NC 90 is cut off, leaving NC 90 to end at its present location in Statesville.
  • 1935: NC 90 is extended westward (over the former NC 171), where it ends in its present location today: US 221. Obviously, some of this section was never paved.
