North Carolina Congressional Districts

North Carolina currently has 13 congressional districts. The state gained an additional district in 2002 as a result of regular reapportionment following the 2000 census.

The 1st district seat was held by Democrat Frank Ballance during the 108th Congress until his resignation on 8 June 2004.

Democrat G.K. Butterfield succeeded Ballance in a special election held on 20 July 2004. Butterfield was re-elected to the seat in November 2004.

The 2nd district seat is currently held by Bob Etheridge, a Democrat.

The 3rd district seat is currently held by Walter B. Jones, a Republican.

The 4th district seat is currently held by David Price, a Democrat.

The 5th district seat was held by Richard Burr, a Republican, during the 108th Congress.

The seat is currently held by Republican Virginia Foxx, elected in November 2004.

The 6th district seat is currently held by Howard Coble, a Republican.

The 7th district seat is currently held by Mike McIntyre, a Democrat.

The 8th district seat is currently held by Robin Hayes, a Republican.

The 9th district seat is currently held by Sue Wilkins Myrick, a Republican.

The 10th district seat was held by Cass Ballenger, a Republican, during the 108th Congress.

The seat is currently held by Republican Patrick McHenry, elected in November 2004.

The 11th district seat is currently held by Charles Taylor, a Republican who lost reelection to Heath Shuler, a Democrat.

The 12th district seat is currently held by Melvin L. Watt, a Democrat. It is one of the most unusually shaped congressional districts due to its long and narrow character. The district generally follows Interstate 85 from the Charlotte metropolitan area to the Piedmont Triad.
