NEW College, Pontefract, was established in 1987 as a 6th form college serving the North East Wakefield area.

In the year beginning 2002 (the year of its last Ofsted inspection), there were:

  • 1,268 students aged 16 to 18 on roll
    • 85% of students aged 16 to 18 were studying at level 3
    • 14% of these were studying at level 2
    • 97% of these were full time students
  • 141 adult students
    • 36% of these were studying level 1 courses
    • 26% of these were studying level 2 courses
    • 38% of these were studying level 3 courses

In 2005 the A/ AS level performance points obtained:

  • by NEW College, was 318.5
  • The Local Education Authority that New College is situated in (Wakefield), was 263.9.
  • Nationally, was 277.6

The current principal of NEW College is Dr. Richard Williams, who took up the post on the 1 November 2004 after being Vice-Principal at the college since 2001. His predecessor was Rob Phillips. The principal before MR. Philips was David Machin.
