[edit] School statement of purpose

To provide our students with the opportunity to maximise their academic outcomes within a holistic educational environment. (Revised in 2003)

[edit] History

On the 28 January 1958, Normanhurst Boys High School was opened as a comprehensive boys high school. It was designated a selective school from the commencement of the 1994 school year and received its first intake of 120 boys in that year. From 1999 the school became fully selective with a student population of approximately 720. The school has an area of 63,000 square metres within 5 minutes walk of the Normanhurst railway station. The grounds are very pleasant with trees and extensive grassed areas. Barker College pays for the maintenance of the school's oval, in exchange for use of it on weekends for their lower rugby grades.

[edit] Structure

There are currently 723 students enrolled at Normanhurst Boys High School in years 7 through to 12.

Normanhurst Boys High School is an academically selective high school and only accepts 120 students in year 7, from those who have passed (with extraordinarily high marks) the Selective High Schools Examination in year 6. A small number of students are accepted into years 8 to 11, but application must be made directly to the school. No students are accepted into year 12. Hornsby Girls High School, is the sister school of Normahurst Boys, and numerous joint activities are held annually.

[edit] SRC

The Student Representative Council (SRC) plays an important role in the school. Students are able to express any concerns through the SRC. The SRC also organsises numerous student activities including Mufti Days, Junk Food Days, School Dances and the Battle of the Bands.

[edit] Sport

Normanhurst Boys High School comes under the North West Metropolitan Sports Association. Each year is divided up into two (summer and winter) where boys are able to select sports they wish to play throughout the semester. Currently the choices on offer include: Tennis, Cricket, Football, Table Tennis, Lawn Bowls, Hockey, Basketball, Badminton, Waterpolo, Rugby, Oztag, Squash, Indoor Cricket, Indoor Soccer and Martial Arts.

The grade teams that participate in the inter school competitions have performed excellently in the past. In 2006, several of the school's grade teams were named joint premiers (although arguably this was because the finals were washed out). However in the past the teams have proved themselves either on the courts or on the fields (such as the school's grade tennis team which has made it to the finals on numerous occasions) proving Normanhurst to be made of boys who are gifted both physically and academically.

An established tradition at Normanhurst is the Year 11 versus Year 12 Soccer and Rugby Union matches which take place on the last day of Term 2. Teams from each grade play each other in both codes in front of the whole school, usually to the victory of Year 12. In 2006 the Year 11 soccer team broke with tradition in defeating Year 12 by 2 goals to 1 amid controversial officiating.

[edit] Co-curricular activities

Many clubs and societies are on offer to students. These include a Debating Society, Chess Club, Socrates Society, The Political Society, The Origami Society, The Student Newspaper Committee (Yet Another Paper - YAP), a Christian group newly named Connect (Formerly 'Thank God It's Friday'), the Bridge Club and the Gardening Society.

There have been other significant clubs in the schools history, including the Paper Aeroplane club which existed in the early years of the school, and more recently the distinguished Club Normo; the name given to the school by the year of 2005 - although Club Normo no longer maintains headquarters in the year 12 common room, it still exists outside of the school. The Society is another example of a popular underground student group that exists within the school.

Normanhurst Boys also runs a concert band and a stage band, a vocal ensemble, a string ensemble and a number of smaller bands formed by students.

Normanhurst Boys also participates in the The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
