The meaning of the name is '(the) northern (part of) Odal'. (See Sør-Odal).

The coat-of-arms is from modern (1992). It shows two lifting tongs. (To represent the forestry work in the municipality.)

Nord-Odal is bordered in the north by Stange, in the east by Åsnes and Grue, in the south by Sør-Odal and Nes, and in the west by Eidsvoll.
It is situated around the northern side of the lake Storsjøen.
