No Holds Barred Radio is an internet radio show that can be heard Wednesday nights at 8 PM EST on the No Holds Barred Radio Network. A 24 hour automation replays selected bits and song parodies.

The show originated on the FM radio station WMCX (Monmouth University's student-run station) from 1993 until the last broadcast via terrestrial radio in 1998. In 2004 NHB Radio returned to the FM airwaves for the WMCX 30th Anniversary celebration, where they made controversy after airing the word shit.

[edit] History

[edit] 1990s

NHB Radio was born during the college career of Damon Fibraio, who at the time was taking classes at Monmouth University in New Jersey. The name was taken from the Hulk Hogan movie, of which Fibraio is a fan of. Later fellow student and friend Mike Ellis would join the show as co-host.

Due to the content restrictions from the station's management on top of the FCC restrictions of public radio, the show was limited in subject matter. However, while on FM radio, Fibraio and Ellis still managed to push the limits of FM radio regulations. On the show, Damon and Mike covered various different topics including strange or bizarre news from around the world, original "bits", and music (some of which were parodies of existing songs). The show's first run in with content restriction was when Fibraio aired a bit entitled "Damon's driving school for the blind" in which he advertised a fake driving school for the visually impaired. The bit was deemed offensive by the station's general manager, Professor Everett Rich, and both Fibraio and Ellis were suspended from the air.

Towards the end of their college career, the duo was split by station management who declared that the only way NHB would be allowed back on the air was if Ellis was not on the show. Fibraio disobeyed management and went on the air with Ellis anyway. The final broadcast in 1998 saw Mike Ellis returning, but under the pseudonym R. P. Johnson and with his voice being distorted by a pitch shifter. During this broadcast they also criticized WMCX management (although they had discussed their disdain for management throughout the show's run).

[edit] The No Holds Barred Radio Network

Since the show's migration to its own servers in 2001, it has existed as its own station. In 2002 the station expanded its content by adopting shows other than the No Holds Barred Radio show, declaring itself a "radio network." Since then the network has hosted numerous shows, many of them short-lived. These include, but are not limited to

  • The Goddamn Show w/ Sloan
  • The Cockpit
  • J-Squared Live
  • JJRN, the Jammin Jerry Radio Network
  • PTR (Probably Tech Related) Radio
  • Choke Radio
  • Mozart's Ghost: The Really Big Show (later known as the Social Crime Syndicate)
  • Rye Seronie University
  • The Gay and Straight of It
  • Bitchfest Radio
  • The Pirate Ship
  • Intellectual Lunacy
  • Late Night w/ Liam
  • Masterbate with Mariah
  • MisFit Radio
  • The Devil's Advocate
  • The Treydogg Hour
  • The Dune and Bob Show
  • Take it or Leave it Radio
  • Detox Radio
  • The Susan Show
  • ADHD Radio
  • Reckless Radio
  • Soundcheck
  • Stink Tank

The structure of the network is very different than terrestrial radio and has more of a resemblance to satellite radio in that it is very decentralized. There is no main studio. Each show has its own studio which streams audio to a Shoutcast server which is then relayed and re-encoded in various audio formats such as AAC+, WMA, and Ogg Vorbis. When none of the "studios" are connected to the stream, an automation machine connects to the server which streams "best of" content and recorded shows. This gives the network the advantage of being able to have broadcasters from all over the world, but each broadcaster must have her or her own "studio" and the appropriate equipment.

The network is basically non-profit in nature since it has never turned a profit. In order to have a show on the network each broadcaster has to cover some of the costs to keep the station up and running. This policy was instated in 2003 as listener ship increased, making bandwidth costs an issue. Each year the network holds a telethon to raise money for equipment and server costs, usually just breaking even. Recently the website has begun selling MP3s of "best of" content including bits and parodies.

Live shows are typically on during the evening hours in North America, usually starting at 8 or 10 PM EST and lasting 2 to 3 hours.

[edit] The Goddamn Show

The Goddamn Show is hosted by Jeremy Clovis (known by NHB fans as Sloan). Once considered by many to be the second best show on the network, The Goddamn Show now draws mostly alleged "Sloan-Drones", a name given to avid Sloan fans. The title "Goddamn Show" was decided upon when Sloan couldn't come up with a name, and so chose "Goddamn Show" as a joke.

The Goddamn Show sometimes consists of Sloan ranting on about a topic on his mind, performing a task, or arguing/cohosting with Mariah, his fiance'. He has been known to use a pitch modulator to make his voice sound deeper, call random people via Skype under the alias "Mrs. Brubaker", and proceed to insult and/or prank them for the amusement of himself as well as his listeners.

Sloan is well-known for his creative way of constructing insults (i.e. "You braindead bag of fuck!"), his No Holds Barred Radio automation bits (especially "Shit in the Microwave"), and his tendency to connect two completely unrelated things together in a ponderous manner (i.e. "Wouldn't it be cool if penises could fart?"). He also plays guitar and often makes on-the-fly songs by strumming a basic tune and then adding words as they come to him, resulting in three albums of songs available for download.

[edit] Take it or Leave it Radio

Take It or Leave it or simply TIOLI is hosted by Andrew Cacciapaglia & Robert Styne, along with Mike Cacciapaglia, Andrew's younger brother, who primarily works the sound boards and corresponds with listeners during the show. The show was conceived by the two, who are co-workers and friends, based on some of the conversations they would have with others on the job. The show content ranges from commentary on pop culture to talking about themselves and whatever else pops into their heads. One of the show's personalities is Freddy the Hamster, who shows no remorse for the feelings of guests and fans calling into the show.
