NJ (nj in lower case) is a letter present in many Slavic languages such as Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian (the latter two in their latinic forms). It represents (IPA) /ɲ/]. For example, the word "konj" is pronounced /koɲ/. Most languages containing the letter nj in the alphabet are phonetic, which means that every character represents one sound. In this case, joining the letters N and J creates a new letter and represents a different sound. Like its Latin counterpart, the Cyrillic alphabet has a specific symbol: Њ.

The sound has equivalents in other European languages: in Portuguese it is the combination nh, in Spanish it is the single letter ñ while in Italian it is gn.

Ljudevit Gaj first used this digraph in 1830.

It is also used in some African languages where it represents /nʒ/ or /ⁿʒ/.
