Niwot High School is a public high school, located on Niwot Road in Niwot, Colorado under the jurisdiction of the Saint Vrain Valley School District. Niwot High School's mission statement is to help better teach students through new forms of education.
Niwot High School is a 4A school which enrolls around 1,250 students, and functions as the district's magnet school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. It is situated about halfway between the cities of Boulder and Longmont in the small unincorporated town of Niwot.
The building is located on a hill, resulting in a split level configuration. The freshman and sophomore lockers are on the upper floor near the front of the building. The senior and junior lockers occupy the lower portions.
Each class graduates about 300 students, making for a student body of around 1,200. The freshman class this year has more than 500 students.
Niwot High School offers four world languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, and German.
Also notable is the school's music department. Most notably the Symphonic Orchestra, which has been invited to take part in the 2007 National Orchestra Cup. This involves a trip to New York and a performance at the Lincoln Center against the top orchestras in the nation. Among the other instrumental groups are two jazz bands, the string orchestra, the marching band, the concert band, and the most recent addition, the wind ensemble. The choir section of the department also has several groups, most notably Evenstar, the jazz choir, and the chamber choir.
Their are two student-printed newspapers at Niwot, one school-run and self-endorsed and the other underground. The school-run paper is called the Niwot South Paw, and features recent events in various topics (academics, school clubs, and even sports). The "South Paw" also features monthly columns such as the bilingual "Que Pasa?" and the humor column "Holland's Hits," in which editor Nicholas Holland occasionally makes satirical remarks on certain topics.
The underground paper, FRICH, operates as a satire of the South Paw and of the Niwot Staff and Student Body. Until this year, every edition of FRICH published has had an editorial disclaimer on the back, and the line 'PLEASE DON'T SUE'. The new FRICH team this year (2006-2007) has, for some undisclosed reason, left it off. As a recent trend, FRICH has self-admittedly remarked on their lacking sense of humor in the newer issues.
Other extracurricular activities include a swashbuckling club, a FIRST robotics club (FIRST team #1552), a Forensics team, its chapter of the NHS, as well as several other clubs and teams.
