[edit] Student life

The spirit of being in NITT is the freedom one gets, to explore life, without compulsions, without any crushing force from academic pressures; generally people pursue one or more skills, join clubs and groups to work for their own self on something disconnected from academics.

The best part about NIT Trichy (specially engineering courses) is that the intake of students is from all over India. Each state has a fixed number of seats for each branch. The end result is that for any branch, there are students of different states/culture/language. As most of the students stay in hostel, it gives them a chance to really know about each other. Everyone learns to respect the different lifestyle of each individual.

Extracurricular activities include participation in NCC, NSS, literary clubs, trekking clubs, photographic clubs and students' chapters of IEEE, SPICMACAY, Entrepreneurship Cell, CRY. A modern gymnasium and other sports facilities are also available in the campus.

Hostels

There are thirteen boys' and one girls' hostels. They accommodate 2507 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Committees consisting of elected student representatives manage them. Elected student representatives manage the messes also. The messes are divided to serve both South Indian and North Indian dishes as the student fabric is of all India nature. The students themselves go to the Trichy Gandhi Market 3 times a week, escorted by a Warden, to buy fresh vegetables at a very cheap rate. There is a mini lorry for transporting vegetables from the market.

Each hostel is managed by a Warden. The first year UG boys' hostels have two resident deputy wardens, while the girls' hostel has three resident deputy wardens. The Hostel Executive Committee headed by the Convener and the DCW coordinates the work among wardens and deputy wardens. The Estate Maintenance department takes care of the civil and electrical maintenance of hostels and messes. Each hostel is provided with a television, two DOT telephones, intercom(s), aquaguard, water cooler and kit for indoor games and outdoor games. The Hostel office consisting of Hostel Manager, one Senior Superintendent and supporting staff looks after the day-to-day operations.
