Hi Mark: My understanding is that there is no remaining structure from the original castle. See the link I've added to the 1887 report, which shows no tower on the east side. Please clarify. cheers Nesbit 18:19, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi - evidence for the tower on the east side is from two sources: (1) architect who carried out the restoration work for the current owner and examined the fabric in detail and (2) the account in Pevsner's Borders (2006, p. 598) which states that "The walls of the E portion are thicker than the remainder...suggesting that part of the earlier castle is incorporated at this end of the house".

By the way, this vol has a very good account of the House - one of us should digest and add to the Wiki account in due course.Mark Nesbitt 13:50, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
