[edit] WP:TAMBAY
This is a special forum for Filipinos, why not pass by? BTW I wrote about a Cebuano who was probably the first person to circumnavigate the world:Henry the Black. I am looking for the words that Antonio Pigafetta jotted down in his notes, they were Cebuano. He used them to when he and Magellan's crew had to leave Cebu. --Jondel 00:49, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
Nice article. Is it established that Enrique came from Cebu? Thanks for the link to Tambay. I'll hang out regularly :).--Nino Gonzales 07:46, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
- An article came out at the inq7 website with the words Antonio Pigafetta recorded which were unmistakenly Cebuano. If the words were Cebuano, then we can conclude that the Community Enrique could communicate with were Cebuanos. Ok maybe it isn't established that he was from Cebu, but at least his native language was Cebuano.--Jondel 00:38, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bisaya
- I know SIL categorizes their language within the Binisaya family. But do they consider themselves Bisaya ethnically?
No, they do not. The term bisaya' actually means Christian or Christian Filipino for them.
- The Cebuano article says that Cebuano was only spoken in Cebu a long time ago.
I'm not sure I agree with this.
- Is it established that the origin of the Cebuano language is actually Cebu?
I don't think so.
- Is it established that the Cebuano language came to Mindanao from Cebu? I don't think there is any reason to think why Cebuano could have not originated from Mindanao, or any other place outside of Cebu for that matter...
Dr. David Zorc has a theory that the origin of the people who spoke Proto-Central Philippine - the ancestor of Tagalog, Visayan languages, & Bikol languages - is either northeastern Mindanao or southeastern Leyte.
However, my personal view - and this is pure speculation not to be taken as gospel - is that Cebuano started out in Mindanao. Cebuano is closely related to Surigaonon, Butuanon, and Tausug and they all have their origins in northern Mindanao. I think the name Cebuano happened to be tacked on to the language is because of Cebu's status. --Chris S. 13:07, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Matador
Nino. I never have given much thought to the "steps" used in determing etymology. I think, so far, it's good. However, I think there's another step. What signals me that it's a foreign word is that it ends in "r" - I don't think /r/ occurs at the end of words in native Cebuano words, so this tells me that it's of Spanish origin. But let's say it's Asi or Ilokano, which have native words that end in /r/, what then? Well, there are usually phonological correspondences in other languages. Knowing Asi's rules, I know that the native word gador is gayod in Cebuano. So I'll apply that rule to matador which becomes matayod - and I don't think there's a matayod in Cebuano, is there? There are a variety of ways, I don't think there is one. Because sometimes, it is hard to tell. --Chris S. 12:57, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, I guess the more evidence you have to support the claim, the better it is. You have made reasonable assertions with maru - but what have you got to prove this? I am not doubting you, but some day someone will and it's best to have evidence. And in my Tagalog dictionary, there is tarong - it means "understanding" and "comprehension." --Chris S. 21:22, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Malay dictionary
I 've been searching with google and would appreciate any links or sources about the first Italian -Malay dictionary which should be the first Italian- Cebuano dictionary created with Antonio Pigafetta. This is to conclusively establish that Henry the Black was a Cebuano and not a Malaccan native.--Jondel 01:15, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Advocacy
While wikipedia is not a tool of advocacy, many companies like IBM, Motorola, Intel etc have their crucial technologies and products published (advertised ?) here. In fact, I wrote some of them because I submit them to my company in my real job as a reporter. I contributed a lot to Cebuano and Philippine related articles to make them better known. While the products of Intel, Motorola etc are not advocated or advertised, the purposed of advocacy is satisfied anyway. As long as they fulfill the requirements of being encyclopedic , useful and informative that is. --Jondel 02:00, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Demographics of the Philippines infobox on Tasaday page
Hi, I noticed your comments on User:Matthewprc related to this topic. As you may know, I find the Template:Demographics of the Philippines highly distracting on the Tasaday page. You mentioned an updated template. Is this the one which is on the Tasaday page now? If not, could you link to the new template; I'd like to take a look at it. If it has already been updated, I think it needs to be modified, at least for this article. Please see my comments on User Talk:Matthewprc and tell me what you think. Thanks! --Lensim 03:14, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ethnicity & tarong
Hi Nino! Pasensya na gyud, ha. Kahibalo ko nga dugay kaayo ka gahulat sa akong tubag sa imong pangutana kay busy ko kaayo karon, eh. Kumusta kaha ang akong Binisaya? Ok ba? :-D Anyway, don't apologize for being strong. It's normal - as I most likely was too. I know that Google says what it says about ethnicity, but it's usually reflective of normal everyday people, but as you and I know, on Google they still widely refer to Cebuano as a "dialect" on Google. So I think it's extremely important to give the anthropological perspective great priority since it is based on actual research.
As for the standard number proofs about etymology? I don't think it's wise to think of numbers but in quality. But yeah, number helps, but it's second to quality in my humble opinion. My opinion about tarong is that perhaps the meanings changed over time or even there were meaning that were discarded. Look at ayaw, for instance. It means "don't want" in Tagalog but "don't do" in Visayan languages. But there is a connection There. Also, look at the word "right" in English it means the direction or a privilege bestowed upon citizens by the law. And this happens in French (droit), Spanish (derecho), etc. My suggestion is to see if tarong exists in other Philippine languages and if so, what are the meanings? --Chris S. 02:57, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Paki-, as far as I know, is derived from the affix maki-. It cannot be from pakiusap alone. To me it's used to soften a request. So kind of like "please." --Chris S. 06:00, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] AfD
Pls visit AfD Cyberservices, and see an article created by the same "user" - AfD Philippine Cyberservices Corridor. Pls encourage more well known users to make a vote. I have a suspicion that there will be a flood of posts from anons, and new users in those two AfDs. Thanks. Wikipedia is not for promotion. --Noypi380 11:29, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Liquidity forecast and Cash position
Could you add a little more content to articles like these. They run the risk of being deleted as a dictionary definition unless it's expanded past just a definition. Perhaps there is a place to merge and redirect this until you can write a longer entry? - Mgm|(talk) 10:41, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Essays and Wiki
So you mean the essays can be written by one author, a group of authors, or a community of authors? Sweet. If yes, that is quite interesting and it would be nice to experiment on such essays. Online essays written by more than one person writing a weblog, journal or diary, sounds good. :) Yes, I would be interested in helping out in such, and yes, Wikia (formerly Wikicities) would be an excellent place for this. You could even get the URL essays.wikia.org. WikiEssays are a good idea, so go for it. :) --Noypi380 05:22, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Rizal1.JPG
Thanks for uploading Image:Rizal1.JPG. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 03:07, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Krisaquino1.jpg
This file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Krisaquino1.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Note that any unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 02:24, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
