Nimrod. is the fifth album by the punk rock band Green Day. It was released on October 14, 1997 on Reprise Records. It entered the Billboard U.S. charts at a respectable #10, and benefited greatly from the acoustic hit "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," helping the album reach double platinum status. Though the album still didn't revive Green Day's sales to the level of Dookie, it did achieve critical respect and positive reaction from the hardcore fanbase. nimrod. has sold 2 million units in the United States and 5 million worldwide as of August 2006.

[edit] Trivia

  • Mike took the picture of himself in the booklet.
  • The inside cover states that Mike Dirnt plays the "baseball bat". This was actually referring to the non-album b-side "Desensitized", where he uses a baseball bat to smash things during the intro.
  • No Doubt's brass section was used in the recording of the album.
  • Close examination of the album booklet reveals that all the words that are blacked out simply say "Delete This. Delete This. Delete This. Delete This." repeatedly.
  • The lyrics to "Platypus (I Hate You)" are not printed in the CD booklet. The song was written for Insomniac about a journalist who had supported Green Day in the Kerplunk era, but turned his back on them when they signed to a major label. Between recording and release, the journalist in question passed away. In addition, the song is titled "Platypus" because Billie Joe had always wanted to name a song after the Australian marsupial, and since "I Hate You" would've been a boring song title, he named it "Platypus."
  • "The Grouch" was originally titled "Happy Grouch".
  • "Haushinka" was originally written many years before for Kerplunk!, but they kept working on it and finally decided to record it and include it on nimrod. Haushinka is the name of a girl that lead singer Billie Joe met while he was on tour in Japan.
  • "Hitchin' a Ride" is about alcoholism and is common song for their live concert setlists.
  • nimrod. was the first major label Green Day album to be recorded in standard guitar tuning, as opposed to tuning half-step down as for all their previous albums on a major label.
  • "Good Riddance" was played during two episodes of Seinfeld (The Clip Show Part One and The Clip Show Part Two).
  • King For A Day is a live favourite amongst fans, as the band dress up in silly hats, with Billie Joe wearing a crown

[edit] International versions

  • Some countries, such as Japan and Australia, received versions of the album with bonus tracks.
  • In Australia, the initial release was the same as the American release. In 1998, Australia received a new release, with not only bonus tracks, but with a different cover and CD label. Where the American release included yellow coloured circles on the cover and a yellow CD label, the Australian cover and CD label instead features orange in place of the yellow. The initial release, with no bonus tracks and yellow cover and CD label, has since been discontinued, and the only version available in Australia now includes the bonus tracks and orange CD cover and CD label.
  • On the album (Default Version) the numbers printed on the booklet, disc and case are different from the Australian Version.
  • On the back cover of the Australian version, the track listing on the back cover lists #4 Redundant after #2 Hitchin' a Ride when it should say #3 The Grouch. This is due to the four bonus tracks being listed. Even though, it obviously has enough space to have The Grouch put in. This error could be a typo, but may not be due to Green Day's style of presentation.
  • The Australian Version states that the album was released in 1998, but in the Default Version it says 1997.
