Niles Harris

Niles Harris, a Deadwood, South Dakota native, and Vietnam war veteran; He was the inspiration[1] for the song "8th of November" by Big & Rich. He is also the recipient the purple heart. The top hat often worn by Big Kenny, was given to him by Harris.
Niles fought in the 173rd Airborne Brigade on November 8th, 1965. This historic day started with an unexpected attack by the Vietnamese. Most of the Americans died that day.
Niles was one who lived.
