Nikolai Ogarkov

Nikolai Vasilievich Ogarkov (Russian: Николай Васильевич Огарков) (October 30, 1917 in village Molokovo, near Tver - January 23, 1994), was appointed Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1977. Between 1977 and 1984 he was the head of the General Staff of the USSR. He was fired by General Secretary Konstantin Chernenko in 1984 for his advocation of less spending on consumer goods, and increased spending on weapons research and development.
