NIIT was formerly known as the National Institute of Information Technology, a name derived the from Indian Institutes of Technology. NIIT was founded in 1981 by Indian entrepreneurs Rajendra S. Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani to provide IT education in India. NIIT claims to have trained one out of every three software professionals in the country [citation needed].
NIIT has diversified into software services. In 2004, the company split into NIIT Ltd and NIIT Technologies Ltd. While NIIT Ltd focuses on training, NIIT Technologies focuses on software development and business process management. In 2006, NIIT claimed to be among the top 10 Indian software exporters and have operations in 44 countries [citation needed].

NIIT Ltd mainly deals with work in the field of IT education and training. It is spread over 30 countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa and Australia/Oceania and blends classroom with on-line learning.
NIIT is also a leading e-learning company in the world[citation needed], with development centres in New Delhi and Mumbai.
Knowledge Solutions Businessis the e-learning division of NIIT Ltd. For enterprises, it offers solutions in the areas of Learning BPO, Content Development, Technology Enablement, Training Delivery, Advisory Services, Off-the-Shelf Courses, Process & Rollout Training, and IT Training.
In July, 2006, NIIT Limited purchased US-based technical training and online learning company Element K. [1]

NIIT Technologies is a IT and Business Process Management Services provider present in 14 countries. NIIT Technologies focuses on well-defined industry verticals of Finance, Transport, Retail and Manufacturing for its IT Solutions business.
The company offers services in Custom Software Development and Maintenance, Legacy Maintenance and Modernization, and Enterprise Integration.
NIIT Technologies claims to have received ISO 9001:2000 certification from KPMG for its software development and been assessed at Level 5 of SEI-CMMi [citation needed].
The organization has also been assessed at Level 3 of P-CMM[citation needed].
