Nightmare Cinema

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nightmare Cinema is a warped version of Dream Theater, deriving its name from the approximate opposite of "Dream Theater". It features John Petrucci on drums, Mike Portnoy on bass guitar, John Myung on keyboards, Derek Sherinian on guitar, and James LaBrie on vocals.

During their encores at concerts, starting with November 1, 1997 at the House of Blues in Chicago, the members of Dream Theater would sometimes deviate from playing their native instruments and each play something else, with the exception of LaBrie remaining the vocalist. The songs they would usually play was Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers"; on one occasion, they played Ozzy Osbourne's "Suicide Solution".

Once Derek Sherinian left Dream Theater in 1999, Dream Theater stuck to their own, and Nightmare Cinema never played again. According to Portnoy, there was a certain connection amongst the band members that allowed this experimental group to exist, but this was lost when Sherinian had left. This is an interesting fact, as the replacement for Sherinian, Jordan Rudess, is more than capable of playing the guitar, and has performed as the guitarist in a song on one of his solo albums, Feeding the Wheel.
