Niddrie, Edinburgh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niddrie is a suburb of south east Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. It is not to be confused with Longniddry in East Lothian. It is between the seaside area of Portobello, and the town of Musselburgh. It is near Craigmillar. Niddrie has a somewhat notorious reputation as one of Edinburgh's most deprived districts, but also the home of The Craigmillar Festival Society, a highly regarded Community Arts organisation. The name is believed to be of Brythonic origin.

Niddrie has a strong reputation for being a working class area, and an unkind portmanteau combines the name with "Ned" to create the nickname "nid".
