[edit] Nicholas Fitzpatrick
Nicholas Fitzpatrick was born in Wimbledon, London in 1958. His father (also Nicholas Fitzpatrick) was born in Redford, County Wicklow, Republic of Ireland in 1916. His Mother was born in Moher, Milltown-Belturbet, Co Cavan, Republic of Ireland in 1922.
Nicholas was educated in Wimbledon, attending Wimbledon College, a Jesuit run school which had imposed an early influence upon him. One day on his way to school he was run over by a car. He recalls that;
"I was walking to school and remembered seeing a blurry yellow object appearing in front of my eyes. Imagine my surprise when this turned out to be the yellow line in the gutter of the road, I had been struck by a car! I looked up to see a car stopped with someone looking through the rear window at me. I think that on seeing me look up they decided I was alive and sped off!"
He made his way to school and somehow managed to suppress saying anything about it to anybody, including his parents. This was an early indication of his non-communication of dramatic personal calamity.
After Wimbledon College and due to very poor exam results, he started a work/study course in chemical pathology at St Thomas's Hospital, London. It was not to last. Feeling incapable of accepting responsibility for the 'life and death' nature of the work (and also being squeamish) he resigned within a year of joining despite a valiant attempt by Dr Brenda Slavin to persuade him of his merit in the role.
At first he joined a chemical company (Lawrence Industries) as a formulations technician. Here he met John Lawrence, an emigre from Austria, who fled after being ferociously assaulted on his doorstep by Nazi's during the anschluss.
Later in life he was involved in developing supersaturation processes with Dr Nick Kuzniarski whoes father was a Polish resistance fighter and survivor of Auschwitz.
He now lives in West London.
