Nickelsdorf is a community in the province of Burgenland in the district of Neusiedl am See in Austria with 1 566 inhabitants.

Its hungrarian name is Mikloshalma.

[edit] Geography

Nickelsdorf is the only village in the community. It has a border-crossing to Hegyeshalom (german Straß-Sommerein) in Hungary.

[edit] History

The village belonged - like the whole province of Burgenland - to Hungary (German-Western-Hungary) until 1920/1921. Since 1898 when the politics announced the Magyarisierungsprozess, wanting every community to use its Hungrarian name which has been Mikloshalma in Nickelsdorf's case. After the first world-war tough negotiations resulted in the contracts of St.Germain and Trianon in the year 1918. Those contracts have redrawn Austria's and Hungary's borders and German-Western-Hungary has been part of Austria from that time on. The village belongs to recently founded province of Burgenland since 1921. (for detailed information also examine the History of Burgenland)
